Armchairs

Posted by Allyson on 11:33 AM
I dreamed you were a cosmonaut
of the space between our chairs
and I was a cartographer
of the tangles in your hair

I sighed a song that silence brings
it's the one that everybody knows
oh everybody knows
the song that silence sings
and this was how it goes

these looms that weave apocryphal
they're hanging from a strand
these dark and empty rooms were full
of incandescent hands

awkward pause
a fatal flaw
time it's a crooked bow
oh time's a crooked bow

in time you need to learn to love
the ebb just like the flow

grab hold of your bootstraps
and pull like hell
‘till gravity feels sorry for you
and lets you go
as if you lack the proper chemicals to know
the way it felt the last time you let yourself
fall this low
time
oh time
it's a crooked bow
time's a crooked bow

fifty-five and three–eighths years later
at the bottom of this gigantic crater
an armchair calls to you
yeah this armchair calls to you
and it says that
some day
we'll get back at them all
with epoxy and a pair of pliers
as ancient sea slugs begin to crawl
through the ragweed and barbed wire
you didn't write you didn't call
it didn't cross your mind at all
and through the waves
the waves of a.m. squall
you couldn't feel a thing at all
you're fifty-five and three-eighths tall

"Bakersfield? Where's That?"

Posted by Allyson on 9:52 AM
There is a question I am commonly asked when talking about my home in Bakersfield, California. Variations include "Isn't that the capital? and "Bakersfield? I've never heard of it." Over these past few months I've come up with an informative, accurate, and short answer to this question.

"Bakersfield is in Central California, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles, in the agriculture sector of the state. It's a very residential city with close to no tourist value, which explains why you've never heard of it."
And when asked more about it I usually spit out these statistics:
  • The city has over a half million population and like 20 high schools.
  • Yes, only have one mall (East Hills doesn't warrant the title), but we like outdoor shopping centers better (The Marketplace, Northwest Promenade, etc.)
  • We're within five driving hours of everywhere you would possibly want to go in California AND Nevada (Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, Las Vegas to name a few)
Poor Bakersfield, it seems like the only time it gets attention is when someone kills their whole family. And I'm okay with that.

This Might Sound Creepy...

But I honestly think that Mates of Sate is the cutest band ever. And they have the cutest kids ever! They are just an adorable, loving family. I've never met them, but I'm pretty sure that if I did I would want to be their best friend. Like, I don't like babysitting, but I will babysit their kids because they are probably as awesome as their parents.

Steelers Wooooooo

Posted by Allyson on 8:14 PM
It's 11:15pm here in Pittsburgh and I can still hear thousands of people one mile away from me celebrating in the streets. It's a little worrisome, I've heard some explosions and on the news they were showing some things that were definitely on fire. I can hear car horns, so many car horns and sirens and helicopters. And there was just another explosion. Some places have canceled school tomorrow since people are going to be pretty drunk for the next year or so. Good job Steelers, I'm pretty happy to be in Pittsburgh tonight.
